Chapter Seventeen

“V, get up and get ready for school. You’re going to be late.” Already dressed for the day in tailored gray pants and a pristine white shirt, her mother stood in Veronica’s doorway. It was the morning after her fourteenth birthday.

Veronica stared at the ceiling. Her father had promised to come to her party but at the last moment said he was unable to get home in time. And Veronica had worked so hard to have a party her father would find acceptable. She had even endured the French ambassador’s son ogling her all night.

“V, please, no more moping,” her mother said. When Veronica didn’t move, her mother entered the room, the sound of her gold bracelet tinkling against her watch as she came to stand by her bed. Then she surprised Veronica by sitting down next to her. “I know it’s difficult to not have your father here. Especially on important occasions.”

She had expected a scolding, but her mother’s tone was soft. Veronica sat up in bed, her back against the headboard.

“My father, as you know, was also a powerful man. Even before he was bank president, I rarely saw him. I wasn’t even sure if he would walk me down the aisle at my wedding.”

Her mother rarely spoke about herself. Especially her earlier years. Veronica wanted her to continue, to stay seated beside her. “What was your wedding day like?”

Her mother flashed a faraway smile. “It was lovely. Your father looked so handsome in his uniform. The church was filled with masses of beautiful flowers and glowing candles.”

Were her mother’s eyes misting? This was a side Veronica hadn’t seen before. “Was it the most perfect day you ever imagined? Were you very happy?” asked Veronica, envisioning her mother in a big white dress with her father at the altar.

Her mother placed a hand on Veronica’s arm. “It was the perfect day. And you have many wonderful days in front of you. With luck, your father will be at your next birthday.” She stood then. “Do get up. The driver is waiting.”
